What is a Doula?

What is a doula?

The term ‘Doula’  refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional, practical, non-medical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” – enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.

I offer antenatal and postnatal doula support.  This means I can offer you continuity of care through your pregnancy, and postnatally.  This can be of great benefit to women whether they are having a straight forward pregnancy, or have more complex medical needs.  The support I offer helps to take the focus away from the medical and back to the ‘person-centred’, focussing on the needs of the mother and the family.  It can help with preparation for birth, adjusting to life with a new baby, feeding decisions, birth choices and other issues that may arise.  My doula support includes specialist breastfeeding support and information from a fully qualified breastfeeding counsellor.

I can also provide doula services for couples experiencing pregnancy loss, still birth or the death of a baby.  This support includes caring for your post pregnancy body, help with siblings, coping strategies, and a space to talk.

Antenatal and Postnatal Doula sessions are charged at £20 per hour, with each session lasting at least two hours.

Mileage is charged for visits more than 10 miles from Winchcombe.

I also offer a distance doula service.  Contact me rachel@tenderfoot.me.uk or on 07771 882614 for more details.
